It usually takes me a week to get my leads in order and notes in my contact management system about the myriad of people I meet at shows. My usual plan is to contact each person within two weeks who expressed interest in marketing assistance. As of September 15, 2008, patent agents and attorneys will no longer be able to assist inventors with filing of provisional patent applications or non-provisional (design or utility) patents without actually doing the filing. There is even better news regarding these changes that impact the slimy invention promotion companies and others who have been creating applications for inventors.

It angers me to have inventors approach us wanting to license design patents that were out-sourced to a patent attorney/agent by a marketing company or created by a marketing company. Of course they are cheaper and almost a sure thing for patenting. SO WHAT!!!

After meeting with inventors, many patent attorneys realize that an inventor's product concept may not be solidly patentable. Others even question the concept's commercial viability. I am very pleased that so many ethical patent attorneys send inventors our direction before proceeding with the patenting process.

It never ceases to amaze me how many inventors call our office and get angry with us because they think marketing services should be free and that we will work for them for a percentage of profit. The Red Flag Warnings, the USPTO and the Inventor Protection Act have mislead inventors to think that unless a marketing agency offers free services that they are a scam.

The seminars are the best part of these inventor shows for the educational value. Unfortunately, most inventors are lead to believe that company decision-makers and investors will be there and the inventor will get his/her product licensed.
