Far too many consultants charge high fees and don’t deliver the goods that meet the business owners’ expectations. I think the key word here is “expectations”. Unless I clearly define deliverables with expected costs associated with those deliverables, everyone would be disappointed. On the other hand, it is difficult to determine what those deliverables should be unless I spend a sufficient amount of time with the company getting to know what the company really needs versus what the company executive/owner thinks they need. An initial meeting is simply not enough information. Most often, the executive/owner has a preconceived notion of what he/she needs and requests a quote on a specific project/assignment. As a consultant/resultant I know that no matter how well my company executes that assignment, without extra up-front time, it is not likely to meet the expectations of the business executive/owner. It is critically important to spend more time to clarify expectations and deliverables and this extra time is worth the small investment for the results to be on track with expectations.
